Newtown Real Estate

The city of Newtown was founded in 1705 and is located in Fairfield County.  The city is relatively small, with a population of 25,031 according to the 2000 census.  The city has a total land area of 57.8 miles, with just over 2% of that space containing water.  Newtown was originally known as Quanneapague until it was purchased from the Pohtatuck Indians.

Newtown was a popular place during the Revolutionary War, as French General Rochambeau and his troops made their camp there.  While the Revolutionary War definitely put its stamp on Newtown, it was the Railroad that really turned Newtown into what it is today, bringing in more and more residents.  Those residents would eventually leave, but its population began to soar again after 1940.  Local industry, such as furniture, tea bags, combs, fire hoses, folding boxes, buttons, and hats is responsible for the number of Newtown residents today.

Newtown is a comfortable town, with its claim to fame being the invention of the game Scrabble, which was created by resident James Brunot.  While it is not an extravagant existence in Newtown, it is exactly what so many people want from a place to live.   One knows that they are in Newtown when they spot the liberty pole, which was first erected in 1876.  Residents or those passing through might want to pick up the Newtown Bee, which is the newspaper that has been providing local news since 1877.

In and Around Newtown, Connecticut
Newtown offers a lot of great things for its residents to do in their free time.  There are a lot of beautiful parks, fields for sports, playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, softball and baseball teams, volleyball leagues, lacrosse, and soccer.  There is also an outstanding nature center with trails that will lead the old and young alike on an up close and personal look at nature.  Some of the more popular parks in the area are Treadwell Park, Dickinson Park, as well as Collis P. Huntington State Park.

Newtown is home to many families, singles, business men and women, and seniors alike.  The town is quiet, but offers a good deal of shopping, dining, and even a night life that offers fun for those that want to kick back after a long week at work. There is something for everyone here and a great quality of life for all.
